The origins of the López-Montero family in wine-making and distilling date back to 1788. It was then when the first of their wineries in Tomelloso was registered, which is still on the records at the local archives of the town. In 1963 Juan Antonio López Ramírez and María Victoria Montero established Altosa, a winery and distillery that continues to make and market wines and distilled spirits. In 2005, María Victoria, with her daughter, María Belén, and her sons, Juan Antonio, Pedro José and Elías, created Bodegas y Viñedos Verum. The brand encompasses the wines of the López-Montero family from the best vineyards and terroirs in their property.
Put simply, La Mancha's Bodegas Verum is an organic vineyard which produces mono-varietal wines from both traditional grapes and forgotten indigenous varietals such as Albillo Real and Tinto Velasco.
From the hands of Elias Lopez (as voted one of Spains top ten Winemakers to watch), the Ulterior wines represent incredible vision and outstanding quality as a boutique set of wines made using ancient practices but with a very contemporary ethos. Elias’ vision was to craft wines that would be “future-proof” with regards to the increasing risk of climate change in a region that is already increadible hot. To do this he looked to later ripening varietals that could cope with a lot of heat and little water. Thus the project was born and encapsulates all we desire in ethical and exciting wines. A world exclusive, these are the first vintages and all hail form a single, organically certified estate, “El Romeral” made using both oak and clay “tinajas”. Elias has made waves with the Ulterior wines being the highest scoring La Mancha wines (DWWA) in history and has redefined the style of his region with these incredible and elegant expressions. Limestone,rocky soil, shallow 30 to 40 cm above a chalky compresed stones stratum, 3m depth. Density of plantation: 2,777, trained in trellis. Spur pruning. Double cordon 24 buds.
As with all the wines of Ulterior, they are hand picked and made using various ancient techniques. This such example combines Albillo Real with a touch of Albillo Mayor (the only wine of this blend in all of Spain). The majority of the wine is aged in Tinajas with a percentage going to 600L old oak barrels where it is aged for 12 months. Just 9000 bottles are produced and as with all his wines, their is no clarification or filtration to yield as much character as possible. Suplhur additions are also minimal with just a touch being added at bottling to ensure the wines reach thier destination in tact!
Lemon yellow with golden reflections, dense. Intense complex nose, mineral with red apple and aromatic herbs, hints of cinnamon in a background of quince, an elegant evolution. On the palate it is a wine with nerve, with volume. It is unctuous and the medium and persistent acidity gives it expressiveness. In the aftertaste, memories of aromatic herbs and the red apple come back and it invites to a second sip to show the character and prove it is a different wine.
