Castello di Cacchiano, Chianti Classico Riserva 2015 - May 2020 Decanter review
"95+, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2015 CASTELLO DI CACCHIANO. Flawless Riserva resulting from a blend with great predominance of Sangiovese and little contribution of Canaiolo, Malvasia nera and Colorino. The nose is both spicy and bitter with a nice herbaceous trace where alcohol-infused cherries dominate. Fat, crunchy and generous sip enriched with a good persistence. GardiniNotes, April 2020.
Castello di Cacchiano was founded in the 10th century and has been in the Ricasoli family for over 1,000 years. The estate is situated near Gaiole in Chianti, some 20km north-east of Siena.
Winemaking at the estate dates back to the 12th century. Today, this estate consists of ~200 hectares with some 32 hectares dedicated to vineyards (with the remainder dedicated to olive oil production). The vineyards are situated some 400m above sea level with most slopes south-facing, being ideal for hard-to-ripen Sangiovese. The soil composition, which is made of calcareous clay with substantial portions of crumbled limestone and sandstone - Chianti's famous albarese soil - provides an excellent substratum for the cultivation of vines. Thanks to the soil and to the ideal microclimate, the vines are able to develop to their full potential.
- Period of grape harvest: end of September/beginning of October, 2015.
- Fermentation temperature: 26-30°C.
- Maceration of/on the skins: 3 weeks.
- Maturation: small casks, tonneaux and barriques, all made of French oak (Allier).
- Period of maturation (before bottling): 45 months
This wine is a blend of Sangiovese (95%), Canaiolo (2%), Malvasia Nera (1%), Colorino (1%).
Exel note: this Riserva is simply one of the best Chianti Classico Riservas we have tried. The workmanship of Cacchiano, combined with such a fine vintage, has created a Chianti of great concentration and controlled power with superb layers/complexity. Don't be thinking this can't be as good as a Gran Selezione: it's better than most GSs we have tried, in part because 2015 was so good in Chianto Classico. This is a beautiful wine.
Intense ruby red colour. Complex bouquet, strong and full-bodied. Hints of plums and dark cherries. Soft, very well integrated tannins. Powerful finish.
Wonderful with roasts with dark sauces, grilled meat, tasty, strong cheese.
