Château Lamothe-Bouscaut is located in the village of Cadaujac and dates back to the 12th century. In 1999 it was acquired by its neighbour, Château Bouscaut, owned by Sophie Lurton and Laurent Cogombles. The vineyards measure a total of nine hectares and are mainly comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines are planted on well draining, deep gravelly soils and are on average 40 years old. The vineyards are farmed sustainably and pruning is carried out by hand by five vineyard workers. Vines are trained using the simple Guyot system and fruit is harvested manually.

The 2016 vintage began with a rainy winter which replenished water reserves in the soil. Flowering and fruit set occurred without issue and the bunches were well distributed. The soil water reserves sustained the vines through what was a very warm and dry summer, with record temperatures in August. However, temperatures cooled off in September and the grapes underwent a slow ripening during the final stages of the growing cycle and the harvest was slightly later than usual. The grapes harvested were of excellent quality with great concentration of flavour balanced by a vibrant acidity.

The grapes were gently de-stemmed and crushed before fermentation took place temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with regular punch downs and pump overs. After fermentation the wine was then transferred to French oak barrels, 45% of which were new, where it was aged for 12 months.

53% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep ruby in colour. On the nose intense aromas of plum, blackcurrant and bramble are married with notes of cedar and spice. Firm but velvety tannins on the palate and a well-integrated acidity carry the flavours onto the long finish and give this wine great potential for ageing.
