Since 1946, Second Growth/2eme Cru Classé Château Rauzan-Gassies has belonged to the Quié family, which also owns Châteaux Croizet-Bages (a 5eme Cru Classé/Fifth Growth growth in Pauillac) and Bel Orme Tronquoy de Lalande. Paul Quié undertook a major renovation of the vineyard during the postwar period. This was finalised by his son, Jean-Michel, who took over management in 1968. He is assisted by his children, Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe, in overseeing the three family châteaux. Their passion for fine wine is very much in the tradition of the great growths of Bordeaux, and one of Jean-Michel Quié’s greatest pleasures is to share his wine with people who are dear to him.

L’Orme de Rauzan-Gassies combines the terroir of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne and the know-how/chai/cellar of Château Rauzan-Gassies. It draws on 30 hectares of vineyards in St-Seurin, to the north of St-Estephe on the Left Bank. This areas falls within the Haut-Medoc AOC/AOP; although these vineyards are not as famed as the great Left Bank appellations to the south (St-Estephe, St-Julien, Pauillac, Margaux), they can (and do) produce superb Bordeaux - far better than their price point - in good vintages (and 2016 is definitely that). This wine is a perfect case in point.

L’Orme De Rauzan-Gassies, Haut-Medoc 2016 - fiche technique

Merlot 66%, Cabernet Sauvignon 34%.

As DWWA20 said, "In all of the acclaim for 2019 in Bordeaux, we shouldn't forget just how good 2016 was, too, and to find a Haut-Medoc wine still available from this vintage within our Value price category was an unexpected treat. This is dark purple-red, with earthy and purposeful aromas. The fruit is rich, dense and closely constituted, just beginning to leave the flush of youth behind it but with plenty of cladding to take it through another half-dozen years of ageing if you wish. The innate depth and tenacity of the fruit suggest serious vineyard origins. A bargain".
