Decanter Jan

Happy New Year! (as per Decanter's calendar)

The January 2022 edition is here now.

The two main panel reviews are Australian Cabernet Sauvignon (specifically Margaret River region of Western Australia) and Vintage Champagne.

We have both of the top Outstanding, 95-point wines from the former.

First one is the exquisite, estate-grown Woodlands Family Series Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced primarily from dry grown south-facing plantings at Wilyabrup using traditional and organic methods and is also vegan friendly.

Named the Family Series as each vintage honours a family member or friend, and the name changes on the wine label with each release.

The Outstanding rating from Langton’s identifies Woodlands as one of the very best producers in the Western Australia.

The estate has two vineyards, located within 2km of each other in the Wilyabrup Valley. At both vineyards each variety is planted in its particular location due to the soil composition and plot aspect. Both vineyards are maintained by hand and attention including under vine cultivating, hand weeding, cane pruning, bunch and crop thinning, leaf removal and hand picking.

Although it’s at the top end price-wise, Matthew has ideal cellaring potential with an optimum drinking window of 2028 to 2040 and will be well worth the money at £67.00, and the wait!

The second panel topper is not available until February 2022 and in extremely limited numbers...

True to its poetic namesake, Xanadu is located in an idyllic setting in the heart of Margaret River. Surrounded by magnificent coastline, warm growing seasons with cooling sea breezes create the perfect maritime climate that Margaret River is best known for.

We’ve featured a few Xanadu wines in the past 12 months and make no apologies for adding yet another award-winner to the stable - The Xanadu Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

Not only awarded 95 points and Outstanding status in Decanter but this Cabernet Sauvignon also scored 98 points in the Halliday Wine Companion 2022, which means demand has outstripped supply for this vintage. Frustratingly, we can’t get our hands on it until February 2022 and our allocation is limited to 60 bottles (despite much pleading for more), but we are taking orders now and will keep you advised of arrival date.  At this moment in time, we are the only UK stockist of this vintage and with a great price at £56!

The panellists have also been trawling through Vintage Champagnes, just in time for Christmas, and we are able to put our hands on some of the Piper-Heidsieck Brut 2012 that was awarded 95 points and Outstanding status. It is comes in a gift box, too.

Finally, if you haven’t seen it, in the Top Sweet Wines section of Decanter, it features some of our favourite dessert wines including:

The multi-award winning:  Donnafugata Ben Rye Passito Di Pantelleria - it lands yet again an impressive score of 96 points and Outstanding status; and Klein Constantia Vin De Constance with 95 points and Outstanding status (it is in stock just now but once gone, we won't receive any more until after Christmas).
