In 1897, a group of like-minded entrepreneurs came together with a shared ambition to create the best whisky in the world. No mean feat. They raised today’s equivalent of £20 million and began to make their vision a reality. The best distillery architect and engineer of the day, Charles C Doig, was enlisted. The best location by the banks of the River Spey was acquired. The most advanced techniques were chosen. In 1898 the founders secured their first precious shipment of sherry casks from the finest bodegas in Spain. Now over 100 years later, Tamdhu matures its whisky exclusively in the finest Oloroso sherry casks. Although the casks are exceptionally rare and expensive, they wouldn't change their methods, as they believe it's the only way to create the very best single malt whisky. Although the distillery closed in 2010, in January 2012, the determination of Ian Macleod Distillers saw the Tamdhu Distillery doors open once more. Ian Macleod Distillers have returned the distillery to its former glory, using the same processes and passion for sherry maturation as the founders had before them.

The new 12 Year Old single malt reflects Tamdhu’s commitment to producing ‘only the best’ sherry cask matured whisky, and will replace the existing Tamdhu 10 Year Old.

Benefiting from an extra two years of maturation, and bottled at 43% ABV, Tamdhu 12 Year Old has been 100% matured for a full 12 years in first fill and refill American and European Oloroso sherry casks from the cooperages of Jerez, in Spain’s ‘sherry triangle’. The result is a complex and rich single malt whisky that delivers aromas of cinnamon rolls, orange candy, fresh oak, raisins and faint traces of mint. The palate offers notes of banana, raspberry jam, malty biscuits and toasted oak, before developing into ground cinnamon, dried fruit and Scottish tablet flavours that linger in the finish.
